  1. Arena CAD model can be downloaded here: https://grabcad.com/…/feng-challenge-008-rice-flinging…
  2. The top of the enclosure is open (apart from that little middle section), rice is allowed to fly out but if any part of an entry does, they are disqualified.
  3. The “tracks” for each vehicle are completely separated so they can’t interfere with each other, and the piles of rice are separated by the central reservation.
  4. At the 60 second mark the round is over and if your end is touching ground you lose.
  5. You can touch ground before 60 secs without losing.
  6. The width of the pivot it 50mm.
  7. If neither side is touching the ground after 60 seconds we will carry on until one side does touch the ground… If it becomes clear that nothing is ever going to change we will declare the loser as the last side that was touching the ground. If neither side ever touches the ground then it will come down to a coin toss.
  8. We’ll be using: Aldi’s ‘Everyday Essentials Long Grain Rice’ Product ref: 4088600288949. Straight out the bag.
  9. After each round we’ll be rotating the entries in both the pitch and roll axis 360 degrees and if after this the entry weighs more than 550g it will be disqualified, and the competitor will go through to the next round.
  10. There is 3.5mm between the edge of the space claim and the acrylic each side. So initially the entries can’t touch each side.
  11. All acrylic is 3mm thick, apart from the central reservation which is 6mm thick so there is 3.5mm between the edge of the space claim and the acrylic each side.
  12. The battery we will be buying is a PP3 type with the description: ‘Duracell Plus MN1604’.
  13. The two lanes have internal dimensions of: 122mm wide, 1200mm long and 497mm high.
  14. The arena is all glued together then bracketed with stainless steel sheet metal angles stuck on with super glue. We are confident that you can’t break it by pushing outwards with just the power from a 9v battery in 1 minute – so long as the entry is actually designed to move the rice and not just slowly push on the sides widthways or something (which would obviously be disqualified).
  15. If the entry expands over the space claim then it needs to return to the volume of 200 x 200 x 115 mm, after being taken out of the arena and one minute after the resetting switch is flicked. The battery can be used to power this process.
  16. Springs cannot be preloaded when the entry is shipped or before each round so you can’t store energy during a round and discharge this on the following one. All energy must come from the battery or GPE.
  17. Any entry that contaminates the enclosure will be disqualified. e.g. with glue, tape, oil, water or any other substance that remains in the enclosure after we have removed it.
  18. After each round rice will be pushed back into the middle with a flat edged scraper and any rice lost will be topped up. There will be no hoovering, or any emptying and cleaning of the arena, unless in exceptional circumstances such as if a previous entry has contaminated the enclosure.
  19. The official weight of the 9V battery is 49g.
